Can proper building classification change a project’s scope and cost?

Can proper building classification change a project’s scope and cost?

I’ll be presenting Building Classification and Existing Buildings at IDA Encounters 2026 on November 10 at Hotel Arts in Calgary.

Through two real project case studies, I’ll share practical lessons on:
• Why new and existing buildings follow different Code pathways.
• How building classification determines requirements for sprinkler protection, construction type and fire resistance ratings.
• How the appropriate Code pathway helps define the required work and control project cost.

Drawing on my experience as a municipal plans examiner and building code consultant, I’ll discuss decisions that can make a significant difference when working with existing buildings.

If you’re attending IDA Encounters and are interested in renovations, adaptive reuse or building code analysis, I’d be pleased to see you at the session!
